Off The Shelf: Dirty Little Secrets

Before we get to the review Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone!

On to the review...

This series reminded me of the Sookie Stackhouse Mysteries also known as True Blood but without the supernatural elements. I stumbled across it quite by chance but am really glad I paused to take a moment and give the series a try! Liliana Hart isn't an author I've read before even though I do have some of her books on my bookshelf and what a shame because this series really impressed me, not to mention kept me interested.

The premise of the story is a doctor turned funeral home manager who also conducts autopsies in the small town of Bloody Mary, Virginia, aptly named because of the murders that hit the otherwise sleepy small town as the series progresses. Dr J.J Graves, who everyone calls Jaye or J.J., lends a helping hand to the town's Sheriff Jack Lawson, a former big city cop who, because of an incident in his past more fully delved into in a later book in the series, has moved back to the small town to Bloody Mary and heads the police department there.

Jaye faces personal problems after the death of her parents through a rumored suicide and an investigation into their activities by the FBI that reveals they had been involved in some rather unsavory activities all throughout her life. She has to cast that aside when the body of Fiona Murphy, a local woman with an abusive spouse everyone in town knows about is discovered. The scene and the person responsible for the crime both appear cut and dry until further investigation shows that there is more than meets the eye going on. .

As the body count stacks up and the clues lead to the real suspect it becomes apparent that Jaye herself is in danger and it's all up in the air as to whether she'll survive.

I read the series all in one go which is rare for me. I usually take a break between novels in a series even if they're all published because I get a bit bored of the characters or because lots has happened and I feel like delving into another genre...or sub-genre of romance really. These books are nice and short and the story still gets told to the fullest without leaving you wanting more.

Other books in the series include:

#2 Dirty Shame
#3 Dirty Rotten Scoundrel
#4 Down and Dirty
#5 Dirty Deeds
